Should Your SYB Canopy Be Grounded?Updated 2 months ago
Grounding your EMF canopy can sometimes help reduce electric field exposure, but it’s not always necessary — and in some cases, it can even introduce new EMF risks. Learn when grounding is beneficial and when it’s best to avoid it.
When Is Grounding an EMF Canopy Helpful?
Grounding an EMF canopy is only relevant if your bedroom has elevated electric fields, typically from nearby wiring, appliances, or external sources. These electric fields can couple with your body, raising your body voltage during sleep.
In such cases, grounding the canopy may help reduce electric field exposure by redirecting it to ground. However, this is a second-line strategy. The most effective first step is to de-energize the circuits in your bedroom at night — either manually or using a remote cut-off switch.
If electric fields persist even after de-energizing — due to wiring in adjacent units or nearby sources outside your home — grounding the canopy using an alligator grounding cord may help. But this applies to only a small subset of users.
When Grounding Is Not Needed — and Could Be Harmful
If your main concern is magnetic fields or radiofrequency (RF) radiation, grounding is not necessary. SYB canopies already block RF radiation through shielding, not grounding.
In fact, grounding in the wrong environment can backfire. Some homes have polluted grounding systems, carrying dirty electricity or stray current. Connecting a grounded canopy to such a system can inadvertently introduce harmful currents into your sleeping area.
To avoid this, we do not include grounding accessories with our canopies by default. Including them would imply grounding is always beneficial — which it is not.
If You Choose to Ground, Use a Filtered Connection
If you determine that grounding is appropriate for your environment, we recommend using a filtered grounding system. The SYB NCB Plug is designed for this purpose. It connects your canopy to ground while filtering out dirty electricity and preventing unwanted current flow.
Why SYB Canopies Are Groundable (But Not Pre-Grounded)
SYB canopies are designed with a grounding port so users have the option to ground them if needed. But we leave the choice up to you — because for most users, grounding is unnecessary and potentially risky without proper assessment.
Additional Questions
Q: How do I know if my bedroom has high electric fields?
A: You can use an electric field meter or hire a building biologist to test. High body voltage readings while lying in bed are a good indicator.
Q: Can grounding reduce RF radiation?
A: No. Grounding does not affect RF shielding. Our canopies already provide robust RF protection through their conductive fabric.
Q: What’s the safest way to ground my canopy?
A: If grounding is necessary, use a filter like the NCB Plug to avoid introducing dirty electricity into your sleeping space.
